Find Lost Animals

One of the most rewarding services provided by the Humane Society of Ventura County is the successful reunion of lost pets with their owners. Our staff reunites hundreds of lost animals with their owners each year.

 Looking for Your Missing Pet?

1. Get in touch with the shelter immediately! Come to the shelter at 402 Bryant St. or call us at 805-646-6505. We will take a report that will help us compare your animal to found animals in the area. Do come in and look for your animal at our shelter. You know the identifying marks on your pets much better than we do. Lost animals that have been found roaming free and were brought to the Humane Society of Ventura County are only held for a few days. If not claimed within a few days, by law, they must be transferred to the Ventura County Department of Animal Regulation facility in Camarillo.

2. Check with Couty Animal Regulation in Camarillo. Check their website at VCAR.US and visit them at 600 Aviation Drive in Camarillo. It is imparative that you check back daily.

3. Check with neighbors ~ children are often a good resource, but please be respectful and speak with parents before approaching a child.

4. Post lost pet flyers around your neighborhood. Please be as detailed and descriptive as possible- every detail can help!

5. Place ads in local newspapers and watch for any found ads that might match the description of your animal.

6. Don’t give up. It may take months to locate a missing pet.

7. Call the Humane Society if your pet is found.

Once You Have Found Your Pet1. MICROCHIP YOUR PET! – A microchip acts as an added insurance policy and will help reunite lost animals with their owners, even if the animal somehow slips their collar. The cost of microchipping your pet is $15 at the Humane Society and can be purchased during business hours.

2. Put a collar with ID and a license on the animal so that it can be traced back and returned to you.

3. Spay or Neuter your pet to reduce roaming and not add to the overpopulation problem.

4. Make sure your cat stays inside unless on a leash or in a supervised area.

5. Make sure when your dog is outside it is in a fenced yard or on a leash.

Did You Find Someone’s Lost Pet?

1. Call the Humane Society of Ventura County at 805-646-6505 and Ventura County Animal Regulation at 805-388-4341to place a found report over the telephone, 805-646-6505.

After contacting both agencies, you can keep the animal at your home while still looking for the owner, for up to 30 days from the date that you found it. You may at anytime during the 30 days bring the animal to the Humane Society or Ventura County Animal Regulation as a found animal/stray. If after 30 days the original owner still is not found, the animal must be licensed, spayed or neutered and vaccinated, as a newly acquired pet.

2. Bring the animal to the Humane Society or your local veterinarian to be scanned for a microchip. Many animals have them in the skin between their shoulder blades, and you wouldn’t ever know that it was there!  If a microchip is found, the owner can be contacted immediately.

3.  Post found flyers around your neighborhood.

4. Call the Humane Society if the animal is returned to their owner.
