Casper’s New Life

Friday, May 6th, 2011

In 2008 Casper came in with 36 other horses from Lockwood Valley. He was severly emaciated and lacked all of the propper treatment that an animal should recieve. Today Casper is doing great! He is in a wonderful new home where he recieves lots of love, attention, care and of course toys.

Here he can be seen getting into trouble with one of his partners in crime. That is indeed a hose that the owners were using to fill the horses’ water!

We love to see it when our animals find a perfect forever home!

I Found a Perfect Forever Home!

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011

To All of My Friends,

I want to thank you for helping me find a new home.

Our trip to Santa Paula went well as I was on my best behavior. When we arrived at the ranch and the truck door opened, I was greeted by Tuffy, a monster black lab. We sniffed and kissed and there was a lot of tail wagging. We went for a walk right away and I learned about avocados and how soft it is to dig around a new gopher mound.

After our walk, we had a small snack. I had puppy food out of a new dish that I didn’t have to share. Tuffy had a little food in his dish that was different than mine and he let me try it while he was eating. We checked out the yard around the house next and then I was ready for a nap.

Tomorrow I have an appointment with Dr. Kelly to get acquainted. He even wants us to bring in some of my “poop.”

I can tell my new family loves me  a lot already, but then I am pretty adorable. We will always appreciate that you were there to give me love and shelter when I was most vulnerable.

Love,

Tilly AKA Sally

Bailey Finds True Love

Sunday, March 13th, 2011

Back in 2003 I decided to get a cat of my own.  I knew I wanted to adopt an adult cat from the Humane society instead of a kitten, but at that point I wasn’t quite sure what I was looking for.  So, I logged onto the Ojai Humane Society website and scrolled through the pictures of the cats for adoption and there she was…my cat.  I knew from that moment she was the one for me.  Her name was Bailey and she’d been at there for almost two years.  The next day I went to go meet Bailey for the first time and make sure that she was the cat for me.
I walked into the cat room and was instantly surrounded by loving, cuddling, cats of all sizes and colors; and there was my Bailey…curled up in a corner, all by herself, looking slightly terrified as I approached her.  Bailey was not a cuddling cat, in fact, she really didn’t seem to like people at all.  So, what did I do?  I adopted her.  I can’t really explain why, just that I saw it in her eyes that she needed someone to love her, to care for her, and to give her a home where she could feel safe.  I think to this day, I’m convinced it was her eyes that sealed the deal.
As we finalized everything; the ladies working at the Humane Society warned me that Bailey was a “suspected” abuse case who had taken over a year to rehabilitate, just to the point that she could even be adoptable. I was told that she was very skittish and that she took a LONG time to warm up to people and to be sure that this was what I wanted.  Even my family kept asking me if I didn’t want a more “social” cat.  But, there is a special place for everyone and I know that Bailey’s place was with me.
It took well over three years for Bailey to become fully comfortable and be able to socialize with anyone but me and to this day people often tease me about how “moody” and “unfriendly” my cat is….in fact, some people don’t even know I have a cat, because she has a tendency to hide out whenever company is over.  But, when the house is quiet and it’s just her and I; she’s my little princess and she’s the sweetest, most loving cat I’ve ever known; often curling up with me to watch tv, or sitting in my lap while I’m on the computer.
And even now a days, with a rambunctious toddler running around the house; Bailey sits perched on top of the couch (just out of reach) and watches over all of us.  She’s incredibly patient with my son’s attempts at learning to “pet the kitty gently” and she follows him around from time to time intently curious of whatever mischief he’s getting into.
I feel so blessed that my town has a no kill shelter that gives animals like Bailey a second chance at life, because I’m sure if you asked her, she’d say she’s loving her life quite a lot these days and even though it took two years for me to find her…it was worth the wait.

I’m Dusty and I Got Adopted

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

(THINGS ARE NOT ALWAYS AS THEY SEEM)

I’m Dusty and I came to the shelter in December 2009.  I am an excitable little guy so I tended to act really crazy when potential adopters came to visit.  I was bored and lonely.  When people came to visit, I started barking and spinning and jumping up and down.

Everyone thought I was very cute, but that I would be too hard to handle because of my craziness.  The longer I was at the shelter, the worse I got.  I was so stressed that I could not control myself.

In April, one of the volunteers started visiting me for an hour or two every day.  We worked on practicing being calm and basic obedience.  Pretty soon, I started feeling better.  He became my friend and advocate, and then worked out an experimental plan with Jolene to let me leave the shelter on field trips.

When out of the shelter I behaved well enough that my friend started to foster care me.  Pretty soon a lot of my crazy behavior started to go away.  I decided to adopt my friend and he agreed.

Unfortunately, in early June, I got kennel cough.  One of my friend’s other dogs got very sick and had to be kept away from other animals (so he didn’t catch anything).  It seemed my adoption was off.

Then, on June 21, my friend’s best human friends came to the rescue deciding they would take care of me until I could go to my permanent home.  So, with the approval of the Society, for now I live with them in Port Hueneme.  My friend comes to visit all the way from Ojai every few days.  My new temporary parents say I am very well behaved, and not so crazy after all.

My little story has a lesson in it.  Dogs at the shelter are not always what they seem.  It’s very stressful here and many of us are lonely and scared.  We don’t understand why we are here.  Frequently we are separated from families and homes where we felt safe.  Now we are here in a place where, though well cared for, it is different from what we are used to.  Some of us act withdrawn and scared, some become aggressive, and some act crazy (like I did) just trying to get attention.  I was lucky and my friend saw through my crazy act.  It will be a while before I am completely sane, but with patience and help, I will get there.

Remember; please don’t judge us by first impression.  If you see us and think you might like us, come back and visit us a few times.  Spend some time with us in the playpens and talk to the staff about us.  Most of the time, we are not what we first seem…we’re better!

My name is Rafiki and I came to the Humane Society in June of 2011. I am an 11 year young blue point Showshoe. I am one of the most affectionate cats you will ever meet. I love to cuddle in your lap and lounge in the sun in the outside cat enclosure in Cat Haven. To live a long, happy and healthy life I would like to go to a home where I could be an indoor only cat.

I would make a great companion dog!

Hello, my name is Magoo and I am a 7 year old Pomeranian. My family at the shelter say that I am very loving fun to be around. I like other animals, children and adults alike. I am housebroken and like to curl up on your lap. However, I do like to chase cats so a home with cats might not be the best fit.
