Welcome
The Humane Society of Ventura County is a private, non-profit organization founded in 1932. We receive no direct financial assistance from city, county, state agencies or National Animal Welfare Organizations such as The Humane Society of the United States and the ASPCA. Fundraising events, grants, bequests, investments, supporters and your very important donations are our only sources of income. We truly appreciate your love, concern and support for our Shelter animals and the community outreach services the Humane Society provides. Approximately 95 percent of the contributions we receive are spent on programs and services that directly benefit animals
When animals need a safe haven, we are here for them.
Our Mission statement is, “The Humane Society of Ventura County is dedicated to promoting the health, safety, welfare, compassionate care and protection of all animals through education and community outreach programs.”

Shelter Says Goodbye to Remainder of Lockwood Valley Horses

“LOCKWOOD VALLEY HORSES” Does that ring a bell?
In October of 2008 the Humane Society of Ventura County took in 37 severely abused, neglected and malnourished horses from a property in Lockwood Valley. These horses were in horrible condition. The previous owners had not even provided food or water for them. As they arrived at our shelter, shock and horror hung in the air. Our staff was mortified to see the condition of these horses.
We soon found out that not only did we have 37 severely malnourished horses but 8 pregnant mares as well. We are happy to say that all 8 of these foals were born healthy.
As of this week, I would like to tell the public of Ventura County and actually, people across the nation, that we have placed the remainder of these horses in “forever homes!” It has been a long time coming and we are all sad to see them go, but we are thrilled to say we did it!
The entire staff at the Humane Society helped in socializing these horses. When they first arrived they were terrified and aggressive due to the abuse they had endured. It took a year to get them back up to a healthy weight. We had to make sure that they were in good health before we could even begin to try to find homes for them. Having staff that cared so deeply, that they were willing to work “hands on” and show them they would be fed, sheltered and loved was the core of what we did.
In this economy with so many people having such difficult times with jobs, homes, and taking care of children and pets it was a huge challenge to care for and find homes for these horses. We made over 250 contacts across the entire nation looking for homes. To every family that adopted a horse, and gave it a loving home, we thank you!
If you have an adoption story to share please contact Kate Nelson at volunteer@humanesocietyvc.org.
We are attempting to list names of those who helped. We know we can’t list every single person who was here, although we want you to know how extremely grateful we are! If your name has inadvertently been omitted please forgive us.

WE COULD NOT HAVE DONE IT WITHOUT YOU!
